White Thorn Lodge hosts the Nude Volleyball Superbowl every year on the weekend after Labor Day. 2010 marks the 40th. anniversary and we are celebrating with special prizes and events. Last year we hosted a team from ESPN, The Magazine and they are expected to return. If you haven't seen the article yet, click here. Returning to celebrate our 40th year are the nude skydivers. Each year, over 90 teams participate. Teams form on Friday evening, play begins at 8am on Saturday, and elimination play starts at 8am on Sunday. Competition includes Men's AA, A and B classes, Women's AA, A and B classes, and multiple mixed Novice level teams. Since no AANR or USVBA cards are necessary to enter the tournament, players include both nudists and non-nudists from all over the world.
Over 1500 players and guests gather to play in and watch the games, with tents and RVs filling White Thorn's 200+ acres. Beginning at 9am Thursday, guests pay a special reduced weekend fee and are welcomed to all events: opening ceremonies, dances, club facilities, corn roast, nude skydivers. Many teams return
every year for "the most unique event in nudism." One visitor spoke for
every guest: "I don't care where in the world I am next year, I'll find
a way to get to Superbowl!"
In 1971, Wayne and Betty participated in two nudist volleyball leagues in the East and Midwest. They had the idea to join the two leagues at the end of the season, invite other teams, and sponsor a huge tournament. Wayne asked White Thorn officials if they would be willing to host the tournament as a neutral club. Superbowl #1 was held the last weekend in August, 1971, on two dirt courts. The tournament grew and soon it was decided that it would be held on the weekend after Labor Day. It is now the largest tournament of its kind, with many participants returning year after year for the best fun bargain of the summer. In 2003, responding to the many participants that arrive early in the week or even arrive the weekend prior, "Early-Bird" tournaments were added on Wednesday and Thursday with evening entertainment options during the week. With the availability of our deep white sand courts (recently augmented with 36 tons of new sand), the games go on rain or shine, as happened in 2007 when the AA and A Sunday playoffs utilized them. The long standing tradition of a free corn roast is held on Sunday to thank all the participants.
